Our feet walk about 100,000 miles in a lifetime – that’s equivalent to walking four times round the globe. The average adult takes in excess of 18,000 steps a day. Foot structural problems or weakness can be a contributing factor to postural problems, leading to pains in the low back, shoulders and neck.
Foot Facts:
-
Three out of four adults will develop some kind of foot problem
-
14 million people in the UK have some kind of foot problem, with women having approximately four times as many problems as men.
-
Eight hours on our feet equates to the same foot stress as running a marathon.
-
With every mile you walk, you shift approximately one hundred tonnes (the weight of a blue wale) just buy moving your own body weight forward.
-
There are more sweat glands per inch on our feet, than any where on the body (250,000 to be exact) and the average pair gives off about half a pint of perspiration per day. 20% of the population suffers from foot odour.
-
The way a child walks can reveal whether there are any early problems. These can usually be treated by a podiatrist on children as young as one or two.
Hints From The Foot Health Council:
-
It is best to buy shoes mid-afternoon when the feet are at their largest.
-
Low-heeled shoes (below 2”) are healthier, as high heels increase the pressure on the ball of the foot and may cause problems.
-
Arthritis, diabetes, circulatory problems and neurological diseases are just some of the conditions that can be spotted during a foot check by a chiropodist/podiatrist.
-
The skin on the foot is significantly different from other body skin and requires specialist foot care products.
